Psychological Experience of Children and Adolescents with Homozygous Sickle Cell Disease in Brazzaville

Introduction: Sickle cell disease, the most frequent hemoglobinopathy, is one of many causes psychological repercussions. Objectives: To determine prevalence disorders in children/adolescents living with sickle disease and to identify associated factors. Patients Method: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from June September 2019 at national center mother-child consultation University Hospital Brazzaville. Children/adolescents aged six 19 years old followed for were included. Psychological assessed using Diagnostic Statistical Manual Mental Disorders “DSM-5” which assesses depression anxiety disorders, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire representations chronic diseases. SPSS 20.0 software used statistical analysis. Results: Out 201 included, a drop self-esteem noted: 76.1%, 29.9%, 5.5% negative impact on daily life all cases. These significant consequences 39.3%. Advanced age, duration illness, delay school puberty, use upper-level analgesics, number complications hospitalizations, occurrence disorders. Conclusion: The frequency during experience child/adolescent anemia, requires that education, behaviour change communication be strengthened order improve quality care.
